This
Thursday, House Republicans passed American Healthcare Act (AHCA) to repeal and
replace Obamacare.
Curious
to know what the newly passed GOP Health Care bill does? How will it affect the
U.S. health care system? Here are some highlights that you need to know about
the Obamacare
Repeal bill-
- Repeals Affordable Care
Act Subsidies: AHCA will
eliminate the subsidies that are part of Obamacare. These subsidies are based on the incomes of
individuals as well as on the regional differences in health insurance
costs. Presently, individuals whose earning is under $47,500 and families
of four making under $97,200 are eligible for subsidies under the law.
This provision will take effect in 2020.
- Age-based Tax Credits Will be Created: In GOP Health Care bill, the subsidies are replaced by age-based tax credits. The credits will range from $2,000 for individuals who are in their 20s and will rise up to $4,000 for those who are in their early 60s. A family could receive up to $14,000 a year in credits. Those individuals earning more than $75,000 would see their tax credits start to phase out, and an enrollee whose income is higher than $215,000 would no longer be eligible. This provision will take effect in 2020.
- Includes High-risk Funding: The newly passed bill includes $130 billion in assistance for sick people who would see their premiums rise. These funds are to be used for covering all out-of-pocket costs, get preventive services, mental health services, maternity care etc.
- Waivers for Pre-Existing Conditions and Essential Benefits: Once GOP Health Care bill will come into effect, states can seek waivers from two important provisions in Obamacare; first will require insurance companies to offer basic benefits in their plans; and other the provision will bar insurers from charging people with pre-existing conditions more money than healthy people.
